The Garage

A few weekends back, I decided to give the front of the garage a little tidy-up. What I thought was going to be quite quick & simple, ended up taking me 2 days!! (over 2 weekends)

The 'Useless' Room

It only recently occurred to me that this room actually looks pretty good now - even though I refer to it as my 'Useless Room'. Its the room that you walk into upon entering the front door, so its kinda long & skinny, and kinda, well, useless!

I haven't actually done anything to this room, apart from remove the carpet & have the floors sanded & polished - which was all done before I moved in, back in March '10

I'm not quite sure what this room will end up being used for .... at the moment, it holds the dining table - that is never used because I eat in front of the TV most nights!!

Bathroom Mini-Makeover

This was a 'quick win' room ..... I had left-over tile & laminate paint from the kitchen make over, as well as a small colour sample pot of paint, so I figured why not put it to good use!!

The bathroom was spotlessly clean when we moved in, but soooooooooo dated. I'm happy with the results on this one, really simple, yet has a nice effect.

From memory, this room only took a couple of days ... as long as it took for the paint to dry & then do a 2nd coat :) The brand & colour paint I used here is 'Nippon - Posseidon'

At this stage, I'm thinking this room will one day end up being a kitchen, so I didn't really do much more than this - I didn't bother painting the ceiling, and I didn't paint the tiles on the side of the room you can't see - that would have meant having to buy another tin of tile paint, and at $50 a pop, for just 1 teeny litre, it just wasn't worth it!!

Shame I couldn't paint the tub ... I did paint the soap tray though!! I figured it would look a bit manky on a white wall if I didn't!

The Spare Room

This teeny little room, will one day become my laundry (I think). Besides the bathroom, its the only room in the house that has a cement floor, hence, this room didn't get polished floor boards.

When the guy was tearing up the rest of the carpet in the house, I had him take up the old carpet in this room too, so what I thought would be a quick lick of paint, new curtain & blind, and a bit of new carpet, ended up taking me 3 weekends!!

Once again, Dad was fantastic, and ended up laying the carpet for me - I don't know what made me think I would be able to do it on my own!!

The walls were kind of aqua-ish, so I had to do an undercoat/primer before I put my colour on - I used 'Dulux - Hog Bristle'. A really versatile colour I think.

Here are the before & after pics ......

The Driveway & Front Fence

So far, of all the work on the house, this one has taken the longest, and cost the most!!! I ordered the fence back in April, with a 5 week delivery time frame. A couple of days after the concrete was poured, it rained for about 2 weeks, so they couldn't come back to seal it so I could actually use it! They managed to seal it between showers on Thursday, and it will be good to use tomorrow!! YAY!! No more stumbling around in the dark, dodging mud puddles!!

I am totally thrilled with the results, I think it looks 100 times better already, and I haven't even started on the gardens yet ... well, apart from getting rid of the palms, and other trees.

Once again, a HUGE thanks to dad for his help on this - he arranged the 'workers' and came by whenever needed while I was at work. He also spent the morning here shovelling gravel for me - the run up to the driveway from the road leaves a lot to be desired, so now its nice & even, THANKS DAD!! xxx

I forgot to add .... the fence people will be back, weather permitting, to install the driveway gate - its motorised, so just the press of a button, and I'm good to go!! I wont have to get out of the car to open the gate in the rain, or in the dark!! Horah!!!

I changed my mind on the colour of the pickets for the side fence & gates after I had ordered them, and I'm glad I did now ... they were originally going to be white, so that's why the posts are white - they had already made them by the time I changed my mind. I like it though, I think the white posts look fine! I think if the pickets were white, it would look too stark.

Thinking about Bathroom Colour ...

Like any self-respecting new home owner with big renovation plans, I leaf though magazines looking for ideas ... I saw an amazing bathroom in one of these mags, and fell in love with the colour of it.

I think my new bathroom will eventually end up being in the room that is currently the kitchen, so I painted some sample spots in there to see if I really do love it .....

This is the lighter shade of the two I picked to match the magazine picture ... (excuse the kitchen draws sitting there, they had just been painted)

and this is a darker option ....

I'm still undecided as to which one to go with, but right now, I'm liking the darker option.

No more carpet!

Before I 'officially' owned our home (Friday 26 March, 2010, 14h30), the morning of settlement, I had the carpet ripped up!! They came in on Sat 27 March to fill the gaps between the boards. They returned on Monday 29 March to start sanding & polishing!! They finished on Tuesday 30 March.

Kitchen Transformation - Updated 5 June 2010

As it could be anything up to 6 or maybe even 12 months before I decide which room the kitchen will actually end up in, I decided to give the existing, dated, kitchen a mini-makeover!

With Dad's help, I ripped up the old vinyl flooring, and have new vinyl to put down when I finish painting.

Today I put 2 coats of primer on the cupboards, the 2nd coat was WAY easier than the first!! Its Good Friday, and nothing is open, so the plan for tomorrow is to go & get the final coat ... I am going to finish them in white.

I didnt have anything with me at the new house, so I need to bring the cupboard handles here to give them a good scrub, and then I will spray paint them black, to give them a new lease on life!
